13 UNIVERSITÄT UNIVERSITY In 2007 TU Ilmenau defined six important interdisciplinary research priorities (see chapter „Research“, Page 17). These research alliances, based in the two fields “Microsystems and Nanosystems” and “Smart Systems Engineering and IT”, cover the same 11 topics one-on-one of the “Megatrends“, identified by the Thuringian Federal Government in the “Zukunftsatlas 2020” (Future Atlas 2020) as the most important growth areas in the years to come. Today TU Ilmenau works in two research fields focused on current and future requirements of the industries: the Inter-departmental Institute for Micro- and Nanotechnologies IMN MacroNano® links the cross-sectional technologies Microsystems Technology and Nanotechnology for opening up new applications, and the Inter-departmental Center for Energy Technology conducts research into efficient and environmentally friendly use of new energy sources. Under the umbrella of the Thüringer Innovationszentrum Mobilität ThIMo, scientists of TU Ilmenau together with renowned research centers and companies initiate the change in sustainable mobility. And based in the Thuringian Center for Mechanical Engineering, universities, research centers and companies develop precise, flexible and resource-saving procedures for mechanical engineering under the responsibility of TU Ilmenau.
